Schmincke

For over 140 years, it’s been a passionate goal of Schmincke to produce the finest and best quality artists' colours and thus make the world more colourful. With a long company history beginning in 1881, when the colour chemists Josef Horadam and Hermann Schmincke came across traditional resin-oil paint recipes of the art professor Cesare Mussini in Florence. These unique and traditional colours from the old masters were very different from the normal paints of that time, made without resins.

Based on these recipes, Schmincke founded the company in 1881 under the name H. Schmincke & Co. and called the first product "Mussini". Years later, in 1892, Josef Horadam developed the liquid-poured watercolour paints named after him and received patents for them throughout Europe. To this day, the Mussini artist resin oil paints and the Horadam artist watercolor paints are the most famous Schmincke varieties in the world.
